She says she lost her virginity aged 11 with her year-old boyfriend. Despite a few laboured sentences, excessive use of hyphens and the odd overzealous monologue, I'm a sucker for a nice bit of romance so the book redeemed itself in the end! The situation in Italy was very well portrayed and, like others, I wonder if the ending paved the way for a further addition to the series. I thought Louisa Young went off at a bit of a tangent with the 'long lost relative in Italy' storyline and it seemed as if she was desperate to shoehorn in that particular bit of history Mussolini and Fascism. Through Aldo we learn about the history of the Jews in Italy and particularly Rome and the Ghetto because Aldo and his family are Jewish. Did we know that Nadine is Jewish? That is until the s when Mussolini gains power and suddenly being Italian and Jewish is not a possibility.

When I entered to win a copy ,I hadn't realised that this was actually the third book of a series. It's not something I remembered from the first two books, but she is, as are her cousins who stubbornly refuse to recognise that the prognosis for Jews anywhere in Europe is looking increasingly bleak. However, the pace picked up from the middle of the book onwards and I became more absorbed in the characters and their stories. Riley and Nadine were in the background.
